Fawns are great at camouflage; they have virtually no scent and they are capable of lying perfectly still all day until their mother comes to get them. This painting took me just about all day. There is a community art show soon in which I am hoping to enter something, so I figured I should try to do some stuff that might be worthy. Please let me know what you think. Original is 9"x12", gouache on watercolor paper.

Beautiful piece, and great timing...my wife and I just missed witnessing the birth of a fawn by a minute or two today. I noticed a doe lying down in the woods in our back yard about noon today. It was pretty far away, but I could see she was licking something. I thought that was strange, and then my wife squealed "It's a baby!" One of the coolest things we've ever seen. And the camo is perfect; once they stopped moving and licking, they dissolved into the pinestraw and dappled sunlight and completely disappeared.
Absolutely stunning KD!! You should be proud of this one, it's a real beauty! I sure wish I had time to paint something for this challenge, but I had to pull something out of my hat from my greeting card program. It's just not the same! (But thanks for your sweet comment.)
OHH this's so sweet!!! I really love it!!
I'd vote for it if it was running for congress...very nice, esp. considering the time frame.
Gorgeous details! I want to hug him!
Oh I love this, this is so beautiful! It reminds me of Bambi too!
Honestly? This took my breath away. I like everything about it. It is really beautiful, so serene, and I like the fawn's peaceful eye. Very very lovely. You should be so proud!
How sweet!
spectacular
What a beautiful illustration! I love your style.
This is just beautiful, Kelly. The camouflage is perfect when these lovely creatures are in the forest of shadows and sunlight.
It's a beautiful painting Kelly!
Gee... it's nice.. wish I could paint in gouache :), yes.. my first impression is.. Bambii... :D, I never know that a fawn can hide all day until now.. great story, great painting too!
You did a wonderful job on this, Kelly! Beautiful work! Last year, my neighbors and my family took care of a baby deer that had something wrong with its "knee" area; it couldn't bend it therefore it couldn't walk! My neighbors were really good about exercising the leg. The fish & wildlife people said to leave it alone, let nature take care of it (ie: STARVE!) We couldn't do that! As far as we know, he ended up doing just fine and eventually ran off AND the encounter didn't make him less wild. Again, beautiful work on your fawn. You should be proud! (Sorry this is so long!) :)
beautiful painting!
Vey nice painting Kelly, so sweet :)
Thanks for your visit and comment.
this is a lovely painting, well done!
Absolutely, this is worthy. :-)
This is a very beautiful painting, Kelky, very delicate and touching. You do a wonderful job with goache, the shadows, the feel of fur, the quiet atmosphere, it's all there. I agree with all the comments, you should be proud of this one!
I'm glad your daughter likes my illo. :-) Who can resist a puppy, right?
Incredible! Well done, Kelly! I love this little deer. :)
Cute! Really well executed! (Maybe that's the wrong word to use considering what happened to Bambi's Mom?!) Well done!
This is absolutely exquisite! The time spent on it obvious.
Thanks for visiting my blog today. You certainly have a talent for drawing animals-- all of these pieces are fantastic. I'll keep an eye on your work to help keep me inspired!
