The Blues - Illustration Friday

Work in Progress! This is for my portfolio, the second illustration of a series of 3 that I'm doing from "The Ugly Duckling". In this situation the ugly duckling has the blues when confronted with a bossy hen and cat.
Please see the first illustration below. I will post this finished painting hopefully by next week. This is a digital photo (which is why it is a bit blurry enlarged) of gouache on illustration board.
I would appreciate any comments!

Kelly--
this looks really, really good! I love the composition, very creative, and the expressions are perfect. I can't wait to see the finished piece, but I have to say I love this sketch. I've always liked the look and feel of "work in progress" even as a finished piece!

THIS STORY WAS ONE OF MY VERY FAVORITE AS I WAS A CHILD. YOUR ILLUSTRATIONS ARE GREAT! REALLY, I LOOK FORWARD TO MORE OF THEM.

Hi Kelly

I think your work has great appeal for kids. As mother of 3 I've seen my fair share and it's up there with the good ones! I'm also venturing in the same direction as you, want to do kids books and trying to build up portfolio, so I hope you take this critique the right way :-) I think the composition, especially on the first illo was great, intimidating for the little duckling. I've just found with my own stuff that I tended to illustrate literally from the same angle and really had to force myself to change the perspective. The results have been favourable.

Umm, hope that's helpful
